Here are some of the comments we’ve received from past participants in E-script’s screenwriting, TV writing and playwriting courses and workshops:
“LUCY, I LOVE WORKING WITH YOU. I had no idea what to expect but took a chance and I am glad I did. You are very attentive, supportive and compassionate. What an excellent mentor you have been to me.”
To Mike Snyder: “Not trying to suck up to you, just stating a fact. I have taken several screenwriting course over the years, but I have to say that I have learned more in the last three days from you than from any of those classes.”
“After my consultation with Sharon [Pollock] I have worked a bit more on my play and I was wondering if it would be possible to set another consultancy with her. I found her commments very useful the first time around and it would be great if I could get the chance to work with her again.”
To Frank Moher: “I want to thank you again for the time, close examination and encouragement you’ve given. You’ve been remarkably helpful, and you don’t realize what a fan club you have now in Arkansas, because I’ve told many what a terrific mentor you are are! I have passed on the website, too, to those who share my interests, either as teachers or theatre artists.”
“I’d just like to tell you how pleased I am so far in my work with Laurie Scheer. With her help, I am cooking along on my new screenplay, a romantic comedy. Laurie has been the perfect teacher for me — challenging and supportive. She is also extremely responsive, gives excellent feedback and keeps in touch constantly. So, needless to say, I’m thrilled.”
“I’ve worked with both Frank Moher & Mark Turvin on play scripts. First class.”
“Thanks to you, Mike [Snyder], there’s already a noticeable improvement in my script. You’ve given me great advice and I appreciate it.”
“I’ve enjoyed our workshop sessions enormously, and take away great encouragement about this play from your notes, Frank. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You and E-script have been a revelation, and I’d like to bring something I’m working on for TV for workshopping in the near future.”
“I am so excited about what Mark has helped me to carve out of the script I had 5 weeks ago. I believe there’s a play in there, after all! His comments & suggestions have been most valuable.”
“I recently completed Bill Ballantyne’s ten-week playwrighting course. I believe that Bill is one of the best playwrighting teachers around; he is very respectful of the student whom he treats with complete equality and courtesy throughout the course. His is a gentle and encouraging approach to helping the student unlock the contents of the subconscious mind and give spontaneous creative writing free reign.”
“Laurie Scheer is a lightyear ahead of other screenwriting instructors. There’s none of the standard pat answers I have experienced in the past, but she gives significant, helpful, and constructive insight into your story and beyond, taking it to a higher level. I received more help and learned more than I ever imagined.”
“Frank: I could not have imagined more helpful instruction than what I’ve received from you in this course! It’s priceless to have your thorough feedback to underscore the tutorials as the points arise in my own work. You have stimulated excitement to continue with this script, because you’ve given excellent food for thought and imagination. You’re a fine teacher, as I’ve said before.”
“I was extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to work with Diana Wagman as a screenplay consultant these past few weeks. Her words of encouragement on the scenes she liked, her frank but detailed remarks about scenes that needed development, and suggestions regarding dialogue became a driving force for me to achieve a better screenplay than that which I started with. I look forward to working with her again and I thank E-Script for the contact.”
“I am very impressed with the professionalism of E-script. You never really know what you’re getting into when you do something over the internet, but in this case I’m very happy with the result (a very workable treatment and Act 1 ready for revision).”
“I want to take a moment to thank you for this course. I was ready to give up all prospects of playwriting before I signed up for E-script. You have helped me renew faith in myself. Maybe, just maybe, I will write a play that will be produced. At the very least, I am no longer willing to give up.”
“Thank you for all your comments, Frank. I know that I finished my play, and that it’s better than it would have been, because of your input. Plus I learned a lot about playwrighting in general that I’ll apply to future endeavours. And I do plan to write more.”
“E-script has outdone itself in giving us access to experienced film professionals . . . . It’s been a great session.”
“I entered a 24 hour playwriting competition this year and guess what? I managed to win first prize. So I just wanted to let you know that I learned a lot of valuable writing lessons from you, Frank. I even remembered some of them while writing into the night. Does that sound too shmaltzy? I guess I’m saying THANKS! ”
“Laurie: I have taken one other local, evening class on screenwriting, but we received only about 1/10th the amount of information that you have already provided.”
“Thanks so much for your assistance, Frank. It’s helping me tremendously.”
“Mike: your notes were a lot more detailed than I thought they’d be, which of course is great.”
“Frank, thank you so much. Really enjoyed this. I’ll be back in October with a finished draft for us to work on together. Your comments have been most helpful and insightful. The course was totally compelling. ”
“I have found your comments to be very on the mark and useful to me. They make it possible for me to write as if I had my own city theatre millieu to serve as a crucible for my ideas. My writing is much more effective and keeps happening more directly than if I were totally on my own, as geography tends to keep me from natural interchanges with other playwrights. Thank you for that. I think I have told you before that the Internet and constant swift feedback is far superior to the endless delays of the conventional snail-mail feedback in which I have participated in the past. E-script certainly works well that way.”
“I recommend Frank Moher highly as an instructor, both his content & his manner: He’s never dogmatic. He’s never sarcastic.”
“I cannot say enough about how much I learned and enjoyed Steve Duncan’s six week course. I was very new to scriptwriting, so I was anxious to learn all I could. Steve’s course is informative, constructive, and gave me a strong foundation for the art of scriptwriting.
“Steve was extremely helpful with any problems or questions that I had during the course. He never made me feel that I was asking a ridiculous question, or that I was wasting his time. This gave me the confidence to fully engage in the course.
“I would recommend Steve’s course to anyone who is interested in learning about the art of scriptwriting.”
“I feel I got a lot out of the course. I’m generally terrible at “correspondence” courses, but this one, due to the use of e-mail, was more immediate. I received feedback very quickly when I sent in an assignment.
“One of the greatest benefits for me is that I’m no longer afraid of having someone read my work. The first time I had to send an assignment was very difficult, but Jeff was very supportive, and by the end I was looking forward to the comments and suggestions he made.
“I enjoyed what essentially became a one-on-one interaction. That’s something that would never be found in a classroom.”
“Diana [Wagman] is an absolute doll and loaded with all kinds of good suggestions and alternatives . . . . I have had steady, consistent responses and good advice from her and I COMPLETED the outline and synopsis for my next spec script. I am going to miss her – which is amazing since all we have done is E-netted. . . . I shall complete the script with a lot more confidence in its viability.”
“I can’t wait to sign up for another E-script workshop!”
“I thought that Greg [Nelson]’s lectures were clear, concise and insightful. I think I now have a sound understanding of the basic structure of a well constructed play.
“I thought that Greg was very responsive in terms of addressing questions and concerns that were brought up during the course. He also chose excellent plays to read and was able to use the plays to illustrate the points he was making in his lectures.
“I would recommend Greg’s course to any playwrights looking to develop or strengthen their understanding of what goes into writing a play that’s entertaining, dynamic and memorable.”
“I have enjoyed this course with Linda [Eisenstein] — no: enjoyed is not the word (even though I have had a high level of enjoyment): the word is grown. I think I have grown in that I have developed a better sense of what my plays need.
“Prior to E-SCRIPT, I have written many scripts, read a lot of books, attended many readings and discussions, but until I had this kind of immediate, expert feedback, I was not able to *focus* on what I had to do . . . . I am confident I will be back.”
“I have taken a workshop from E-script and was very happy with the help and advice I received. I have signed up for another one for this summer. ”
“Thanks for all your help, Frank. It was exactly what I needed at the time.”
“I began on shaky ground with two cold feet. I actually found the prospect quite daunting of trying to develop a play. I could see it was going to be an overwhelming amount of work and obviously the chances of it every getting produced were negligible and knowing this made it difficult to find the motivation. Then I got the idea of developing this idea as a one act play. That way I could do it myself. I didn’t have to rely on it being produced by someone else. With this in mind I could begin.
“So I began writing and sending what I had to Greg [Nelson]. His responses were excellent. He was very encouraging. Pretty soon I got into a flow with the writing and it just kept coming and coming. Then I would go back and rework it after reading Greg’s responses. I also referred to his General Postings quite a lot. I wrote more than 20 pages of script all together and 10 pages of background, monologues, analysis of the characters, ideas of structure, etc.
“Greg responded regularly and in great detail. His ideas were right on and gave me the openings I needed to pursue.
“In the end it became a very exciting exercise and I am sorry it is ending now. . . . I would certainly be interested in participating if this workshop is offered again. I would like to thank Frank and Greg et al for offering this. Great idea. AND great fun.”
“I’m happy for this opportunity to work with you, Frank. It really means a lot to me and to my writing career.”
(A post to the theatre listserv): “I think I was remiss by not telling all of you earlier what a fine tutor/mentor/playwright-shrink Linda has proved to be, in addition to being an obviously gifted and dedicated playwright.
“I took an online playwriting workshop with Linda (E-script — and it worked real well) and got the best no-holds-barred, no b-s, encouraging, specific and impulse-true feedback that I could have asked for.
“I count myself fortunate to have had the experience. And when I have another script roughed in, I hope I have the opportunity to workshop it with her again.
“Thanks again, Linda.”
